“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

“Don’t ever let me catch you in the rowboat with that silly owl again,” said the girl to the pussycat. “You might have drowned! Now let’s return home.”

This is an illustrated map I created for the children’s garden at Atlanta Botanical Garden. I painted it with gouache on chipboard. The idea was to imagine what happens in the garden at night, when all of the people have gone home, and everything comes to life. I tried to make it sweet and just a little bit sinister at the same time.

My red rain boots cheer me up every time I put them on, so I like to wear them whether or not it’s raining. When I wear them on a sunny day, someone always questions me, as if there’s some rule against wearing rubber boots when the ground is dry. That’s why I think it would be nice to have a little black raincloud that I could carry around, like the opposite of an umbrella.
